The best part of my job is helping others learn and grow. Everyone needs coaching as they go
through life, and having a network of people who are rooting for you and ready to offer their support is
key to being successful. We all gain something from educating the next generation of industry professionals. The mentee gains knowledge that comes only with years of experience and the mentor gains
insight into a new and fresh perspective, while the industry itself gains stronger and smarter professionals. It is also critical to have your own mentors. Never in life do we reach a point where we have
acquired enough knowledge and perspective. While we all bene;it from mentoring other people, it’s
important to have your own network of mentors that will encourage your own continued growth.
Surround yourself with great people. In an industry that is fast-paced and always changing, there
will be things that are completely out of your control. However, you have the ability to choose whom
you surround yourself with. I have surrounded myself with a group of people who are driven, smart,
;lexible and—above all—sincere. Seek out people who can diversify your perspective. It’s important to
be around people who have skills complementary to yours and experience in different ;ields or industries, not just your own. Creating your own network of people who can inspire, challenge and guide you
is the cornerstone to any successful career.
It’s about growing, learning and developing along the way. When you’re passionate about what you
do, there is no ;inish line or “I have arrived” type of moment. In my opinion, when you graduate from
college you’ve gained the quali;ication to start learning in a real-life environment—it is just beginning!
There is so much more to learn through ;irsthand experience and different people’s perspectives that
can’t be replicated in a classroom. The most important piece of advice I can give to someone who is new
to our industry is to never stop learning. When people have become stuck where they are, it’s often
because they have shut down their willingness and desire to learn more.
MPI has played a major role in my growth and success in the industry. Being a member of MPI
has opened the door to a valuable network of people who share aspirations and goals similar to mine.
My fellow MPI members have given me incredible insight and valuable knowledge that has helped me
throughout my career. I’ve belonged to three chapters and served on the International Board of Directors for four years, and now I’ve been given the opportunity to be a part of something that is so important to me. I strongly believe in giving back, and this upcoming year I’ll have the honor of serving you as
chair of the MPI Foundation Global Board of Trustees. I look forward to gaining
your support and continuing to make you all proud of what the Foundation is
Have fun! We are in an industry that is ;illed with fun and exciting people.
Working with such an interesting and enjoyable group of people makes our
work seem a little less like work. When I speak or work with someone in our
industry, it usually feels like I’m catching up with an old friend.
