This fabled city on Lake Erie will be hosting the Republican National
Convention July 18-21, bringing 50,000 attendees and 15,000
members of the media, and a number of key Cleveland projects are
geared to that timeline.
Hilton Worldwide will operate a $260 million, 600-room convention center headquarters hotel. Hilton Cleveland Downtown,
designed by Atlanta architecture ;irm Cooper Carry and owned by
Cuyahoga County, will be situated on the campus of the Cleveland
Convention Center and the Global Center for Health Innovation. The
project is scheduled for completion in June. The property will feature waterfront views of Lake Erie while offering amenities including
a full-service restaurant, an indoor pool and ;itness center, 46,000
square feet of meeting space and a “skybar” on the 32nd ;loor.
A $32 million project to renovate Cleveland’s Public Square will
be complete by the Republican National Convention in July. The
development, adding to the walkability and pedestrian-friendliness
of Cleveland’s downtown, will include the narrowing of downtown’s
Superior Ave. so it can be closed on a regular basis to merge the
square for concerts, movies, farmers markets and other events. The
plan also includes a cafe, a “splash zone” for summer months and an
ice rink in winter, along with a lawn to the north.
The $279 million Cobo Center renovation is complete—the newest
addition being Cobo Square, a 50,000-square-foot exterior plaza
and vehicle drop-off area. Activities ranging from music, art events,
yoga and other exercise programs, biergartens, outdoor movie
nights, corporate game events and possibly a downtown farmers
market could all be programmed for Cobo Square.
Detroit’s suburban convention center, Suburban Collection Showplace, announced a 200,000-square-foot addition that will start construction after this Labor Day and open in fall 2017. Once the convention center addition is complete it is forecasted that an expansion
to the attached Hyatt Place Detroit/Novi Hotel at the Suburban Collection Showplace will begin.
Construction continues on the highly anticipated M- 1 Rail streetcar, which is set to be complete in early 2017. ■
